My First Baby Hat

On Thursday, a friend of mine posted this picture on Facebook, asking me if I could make something like this for her one week old granddaughter:

Although I had never made a baby hat before, I thought it would be no problem at all, because the internet is full of cute baby hat patterns, right? As soon as I started browsing the according category on Ravelry, I soon discovered the problem: most patterns were made for a specified head size or baby's age, with a given number of stitches, using a certain hook size and appropriate yarn. To make it short: it seemed difficult for me - as a Newbie in the hat-making section - to adapt the pattern to fit a one week old baby with a head size I didn't even know. What I needed was a general "how to"-instruction, not a specific pattern.

Luckily I've found an adjustable pattern including a hat sizing chart on Knot Your Nana's Crochet. Although I fell in love with the Modified Pineapple Stitch Beanie on this blog, I just used the chart for figuring out the measurement of the baby hat I wanted to make, and made up a pattern of my own, trying to be close to the picture that my friend has sent me. And this is what I came up with:

Looking at the picture, I realize that the flower might be a little to big, but nevermind: this is just my first prototype anyway. I still need Baby Meggi's head size and her Mom's color choice, but this is a nice try to start with, don't you think? And this one? Maybe it'll fit, and if not: it suits my niece's babydoll perfectly! :)

I'm glad I could finally share some new crochet here with you. Just in case you wonder what I'm up to (apart from posting motifs for the Challenge): For a few weeks, crochet has been one of the last things on my mind, and planning for the wedding had completely taken over my life (in a nice way though *gg*). Then I had pneumonia and had to stay at home for two weeks, and as a break from the wedding stuff I picked up my crochet hook again. I've made some good progress with my Mom's Christmas Blanket (which I had neglected for too long), and I think I can finish it in the next few days. I've also designed two new motifs (a square and an octagon), but John said I should not post them "naked" here, but wait until I've come up with something stunning to make with them :) Thinking about the "something stunning" now *gg*
