Beyond the Square: Motif # 13

Motif # 13

Category: Circles

Progress: 115 of 144

Notes:
A circle with lots of sc's (which is rather unusual for the motifs in the book). Would be easy to adjust the size of the circle and make it bigger.

My First Baby Hat

On Thursday, a friend of mine posted this picture on Facebook, asking me if I could make something like this for her one week old granddaughter:

Although I had never made a baby hat before, I thought it would be no problem at all, because the internet is full of cute baby hat patterns, right? As soon as I started browsing the according category on Ravelry, I soon discovered the problem: most patterns were made for a specified head size or baby's age, with a given number of stitches, using a certain hook size and appropriate yarn. To make it short: it seemed difficult for me - as a Newbie in the hat-making section - to adapt the pattern to fit a one week old baby with a head size I didn't even know. What I needed was a general "how to"-instruction, not a specific pattern.

Luckily I've found an adjustable pattern including a hat sizing chart on Knot Your Nana's Crochet. Although I fell in love with the Modified Pineapple Stitch Beanie on this blog, I just used the chart for figuring out the measurement of the baby hat I wanted to make, and made up a pattern of my own, trying to be close to the picture that my friend has sent me. And this is what I came up with:

Looking at the picture, I realize that the flower might be a little to big, but nevermind: this is just my first prototype anyway. I still need Baby Meggi's head size and her Mom's color choice, but this is a nice try to start with, don't you think? And this one? Maybe it'll fit, and if not: it suits my niece's babydoll perfectly! :)

I'm glad I could finally share some new crochet here with you. Just in case you wonder what I'm up to (apart from posting motifs for the Challenge): For a few weeks, crochet has been one of the last things on my mind, and planning for the wedding had completely taken over my life (in a nice way though *gg*). Then I had pneumonia and had to stay at home for two weeks, and as a break from the wedding stuff I picked up my crochet hook again. I've made some good progress with my Mom's Christmas Blanket (which I had neglected for too long), and I think I can finish it in the next few days. I've also designed two new motifs (a square and an octagon), but John said I should not post them "naked" here, but wait until I've come up with something stunning to make with them :) Thinking about the "something stunning" now *gg*

Have a great week-end and thanks for stopping by!

Notes:
A simple square, made with trebles and chain-spaces. I admit it: if it hadn't been for the 144, I probably never would have made it.

Just dc's and chains. Sometimes I really love those motifs where you just take a quick look at the graphic pattern, and then start crocheting right away without having to check the instructions after each round. So relaxing! :)

Does this one look familiar? It's the larger version of Motif # 9 that I've posted earlier in this Challenge. I still love those flower-like circles, the style is quite different from all the other motifs in the book.

Notes:
I remember that I had already made this one very early in this Challenge, because I liked the shape of this motif. However, I didn't like the colors of my first try at all, that's why I haven't posted it. Now I've made another one using different colors, and it turned out quite pretty - so time to share it here! :)

A lacy hexagon with several chain-spaces and picots, so it needs a little blocking to look perfect.

Notes:
Here I've learned a new and interesting way to start a rectangle. You can change the length of the first row according to the desired format of your rectangle - this way you could make a nice table-runner for instance. I'd hit the "like"-button on this one :)

On a Personal Note

Now that we've told our family and friends, and finally set the date, it's time to bring the News to you, my blogging friends: John and I am getting married!!

Source: Pinterest

Our big day will be next year, on June the 29th. Although John had already proposed to me in August, it took a while for us to organize the most important things, but now we've booked the priest and the church, the location for the party, and the photographer.

We'll have a civil wedding in the registry office (which is obligatory in Germany), and a blessing ceremony afterwards. Unfortunately we're not allowed to have a catholic wedding, because John had been married before. Although it was "only" a civil wedding, and neither him nor his ex-wife were catholic, the catholic church regards a civil marriage between non-catholics equivalent to a church wedding between catholics, and therefore the marriage can not be resolved. (The weird thing about this: if a catholic decides to have a civil wedding only and gets divorced, he's still allowed to have a catholic wedding with another partner later, since his first marriage - according to the catholic law - wasn't valid in the first place). In the beginning I was devasted, because all this paperwork at the registry office just doesn't mean anything to me - it's merely signing some contracts, that can be resolved at will, so where's the meaning in that? On the other hand, changing my confession just to have a church wedding would be hypocrisy and, again, wouldn't really mean anything to me, so that was no option either. My Mom told me to accept the facts, get over it, and be happy with what we can have, which is the blessing ceremony - it's basically like a regular catholic service with a blessing of the rings, but without the wedding vows.

Needless to say, that the wedding is the no.1 topic on my mind right now, and I'm spending hours browsing the according boards on Pinterest and Wedding Gawker, looking for inspiration for the dress, the flowers, the decoration and more. I think I've never been so excited in my life!!

I promise you, that I won't bore you with this topic in every post now, but I'll probably write a "Wedding News" post occasionally to keep you up to date :)

Have a great week-end everybody!

I was so looking forward to trying this motif, because it features the Leaning Tower stitches that I have learned when I made motif # 109, a square. Love this stitch and the effect it creates, I can't wait to start a bigger project using this stitch!

Notes:
How do you take pictures of triangles? I usually place my triangles on the table with the tip pointing upwards, and if you take a quick look at our gallery, you can see that most of the triangles are photographed this way. This time I've turned the triangle upside down, with the tip pointing downwards - looks somehow strange to me, just like the "give way" signs we have in German traffic :)
