Beyond the Square: Motif # 96

Motif # 96

Category: Squares

Progress: 84 of 100+

This is a basic mesh square, not a "motif" per se - however, I think it would look lovely in an afghan together with more elaborate squares. This way the blanket wouldn't look too overwhelming. This motif is also the foundation for the next motif, # 97, that you'll find here soon.

Motif # 16

Category: Circles

A circle made with puff-stitches. I like them, but when in doubt, I'd rather go with popcorn-stitches. What about you? Puff or Popcorn?

A New Pair of Potholders

Actually the headline of this blog-post should be "I've actually made something I've pinned on Pinterest" :) Sometimes I think, that the more ideas I pin to my crochet-board, the less likely it is, that I really make anything - you probably know what I mean. However, I knew that it was different when I've pinned those gorgeous potholders a while ago: I fell in love with this unique pattern immediately and they went right to the top of my to-do-at-once-list.

You can find the english version of the free pattern on Tintin luomukset (a finnish blog), and also check out the pattern page on Ravelry and find pictures of more potholders by other Ravelry members in the projects-section. Thank you Tintti for sharing this amazing pattern!!

It took a while until I had figured out how to work the backside with the contrasting yarn, but after I had completed the first row and knew how it was done, it was all easy-peasy. This was definitely not the last pair of potholders I've made with this pattern (especially since my Mom has already inspected my stash and suggested some color-combos that would fit into her kitchen).

And now from potholders to pillows: the current collection at The Crochet Boulevard is still open for you to share your crochet pillows with us, and there's still plenty of time to vote for the next topic. You'd rather like to share something else that you've crocheted lately? No problem, there'll be another Free Topic Link-party next week-end, don't miss that!

Thanks for your visit in k-town today,
have a great week everyone!

Another easy triangle in a color-combo I've never used before. It was the first time that I worked with this shade of yellow, which is actually named "golden" in the Schachenmayr Catania collection. Come to think of it - I haven't seen this skein in my stash for a while, I wonder where it's hiding...

One of the rare pentagons in the book. I'm so not used to this shape, that I accidently saved the pictures of this motif in my "hexagons"-folder on my PC, and later wondered where those pictures were. Happens when you can't count to six :)

Easy circle with some picots in the last round. Somehow it reminds me of the steering wheel on a ship, should have picked more navy colors maybe.

An interesting way of working: the sides are made with long chain-rows and just a few sc's. Blocking wasn't that easy though, and it still looks a little crooked.

That's another hexagon that was difficult to photograph on a black background. The color combo I've used looks somewhat different from the ones I usually pick, and I think I've never used this shade of blue before or after. Not sure if I like it.

In the beginning, I had no intention whatsoever to make this square, I think I never looked at it twice - then, in March, I've seen Linda's pretty version of that square on her blog and I immediately fell in love with it. It's so amazing how the use of different colors can change the look of a motif completely!

Finally I can post this motif! I've made this hexagon a few month back, when I still used the black background for my motifs - and I just wasn't able to get a good shot of this one, the white always looked somehow yellow-ish. And it would have been a pity to skip this one, don't you think? I love how it turns from circle to star to hexagon! ♥

A new Project, an Award, and more

Hello World, you look wonderful today! :)

Today I've got several things to share with you, so let's just start right away with a new project:

This is the start of a new blanket, it will be another double-ended crochet (or "Crochenit") blanket, like the "Magic Blanket" I've made last year. I started the blanket last week-end with some left-over yarn in my stash, and so far I've made about 30cm. I'll tell you more about the how's and why's in another post when I've made some more progress.

When I went through my stash last week-end, I was also delighted to find a bunch of motifs for the Beyond the Square Challenge, that I had made before I went on vacation - and I had totally forgot about them. Now I just have to weave in the ends and block the motifs, so I can publish them here on my blog. While I was gone, a few girls have joined our Challenge and added their motifs to the Gallery, so I've also updated the Challenge News today to welcome the new members to our little party.

In the News Update, I've also mentioned Kara's Granny Month over at Petals to Picots, and I thought I'd recommend her idea here as well, because it might be interesting to all of you who love Granny Squares (and who of us doesn't? *gg*)

Finally, I'd like to thank the lovely ladies who gave me the "One Lovely Blog"-Award recently: Thank you Craftgirl78, Debi Y., TACIStudio, Ali and Ruby/Moley Makes - I really appreciate this honor!

Now 7 facts about me. Okay, this is easy this time, I'll just sum up a few things about our vacation:

In the past few weeks I've...
  • rooted for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, MI (but still don't get the rules of Baseball)
  • got soaking wet in the mists of the Niagara Falls, Canada (even my camera stopped working for a while - the shock!!!)
  • got a bad bad sunburn at Venice Beach, CA (our own fault: we've forgot the sun-lotion at the hotel)
  • had a mexican Dinner in Tijuana, Mexico (another thing accomplished on my life's to-do-list)
  • played Poker at the El Dorado in Reno, NV (and the hotel was the best and cheapest during our road-trip. Weird.)
  • walked over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA (taking lots of pictures, it took us about an hour)
  • held a Tarantula in a Tattoo Parlor in Royal Oak, MI (while John got his "D" for Detroit on his arm)

Last but not least, I'd like to pass this award on to

Even if you don't play along in the award-games: I love visiting your blogs, just wanted to let you know... :)

Thanks for stopping by in k-town today,
have a lovely week-end everybody!

Back in K-Town

Hey good lookin'! :)

John and I am back from vacation and the past five weeks almost seem like a dream - it'll probably take a while for our life to return to normal, after all the adventures that lie behind us, and all the exciting things and places we've seen. Want to see some pictures?

A walk along the Detroit Riverfront, MI

At the Horse Racetrack in Hazel Park, MI

At Comerica Park, Home of the Detroit Tigers, MI

At Niagara Falls, Ontario/Canada

Fireworks over the Niagara Falls, Ontario/Canada

At La Jolla Shore, San Diego, CA

A day-trip to Tijuana, Mexico

On Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles, CA

In Beverly Hills

On the Walk of Fame in Hollywood

At Malibu Beach, CA

At the Pacific Coast, on the way to Monterey, CA

On Highway No.1, CA

On Cannery Row, Monterey, CA

At the Rodeos in Salinas, CA

A day-trip to Reno, NV

At the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA

At Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The "Painted Ladies" in San Francisco

At Union Square, San Francisco

You see, we've been quite busy over the last weeks. We'll probably have to live on water and bread for the next few months, because this journey was so expensive :) But it was more than worth it, you only live once, right?

I was informed via e-mail when somebody left a comment here and also received some personal e-mails, but unfortunately I couldn't find the time to respond to your questions - please be patient with me, I try to catch up with everything I've missed in blogland, soon!

I've already started a new link-party over at The Crochet Boulevard - it's a Free Topic party this time, so you can share any of your crochet creations (the poll for the next theme-party is still open, too). Hope to see you there!

Bye for now, I hope I'll be back with some new crochet, soon!
